Who Would Buy This: Those shopping for a low cost, user-friendly android tablet which is well equipped with some relatively good technologies such as Android 4.0, WiFi connection, e-book reader, accelerometer, and more.

Pros:

  • The Coby Kyros measures at 7.5-inch H x 4.4-inch W x 0.5-inch D; it weighs 10.4 ounces, so it is fairly slim and lightweight. The display is a 7-inch LCD resistive touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 WVGA. Actually, the size of the display already meets the expectations; in fact, some of the best selling tablets in the market also possess the same screen size.
  • The core specification is fairly good with a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. There is a 4GB of storage capacity on-board, yet it is possible to expand the capacity up to 32GB with a microSD or microSDHC.
  • E-book factor - The ability to read color e-book is always a good benefit from an inexpensive Android tablet. The Coby Kyros is compatible with ePub standard. Considering that there are already thousands of books transformed into this format, the tablet can also act as an excellent e-book reader. The screen resolution is not very bad at all, so it should be comfortable to spend some hours reading on this tablet.
  • Some of the pre-loaded applications include eReader, Calculator, e-mail, eMusic, internet browser, calendar, clock, gallery, and GetJar Marketplace. Of course, it is possible to install new Android Apps if necessary.
  • Battery life is very adequate; you get about 5-6 hours usage from a full charge.

Cons:

  • The screen isn’t viewable in sunlight, but it should not be a deal-breaker especially as this is typical of the range of tablets of the same class.
  • There is no compatibility with Google Play. However, you have access to a huge range of applications with Getjar and the Amazon app market.
  • When the tablet is put into sleep mode, you need to disconnect then reconnect the Wi-Fi for the device to become connected again.
  • The quality of the 0.3 MP front-facing camera leaves a lot to be desired so we advise that you choose another tablet if you have Skype or video conferencing high up on your list of requirements.

Guarantee: 1-year warranty

Value for money?

This tablet is currently priced in a very attractive range, making it suitable for those on a budget. The Coby Kyros MID7048-4 seems to meet the expectations for those who have basic tablet needs and don’t need all the bells and whistles of a high-end tablet such as an Apple iPad. It is a good portable gaming device and e-book reader plus is nice for surfing the web or checking up on your emails. Among other Android tablets in the same class, Coby Kyros should be one of the most preferable choices.

A newer 10.1-inch version of this tablet is now available – the Coby Kyros MID1045-8.
